Balnaves Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Deep rich red in colour, the nose is intense with aromas of cassis, blueberry, mint and seaweed, combined with fine mocha-coffee French oak. The palate is structured and lean with ripe cassis fruit and a fine tannin finish.

Balnaves` 35 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards are split up into sub-blocks (some just one hectare in area), on the basis of soil type, clone variation, trellis type etc. This enables Balnaves to program different treatments for these smaller areas. Supplementary water can be supplied using a central computer system, but at least one third of the vineyard has not been watered for five years. The vines are trained on a single wire.

Excellent winter rain in 2009 set the scene for a very good 2010 vintage. The overall season was warm and mild with regular small rains, keeping the vines fresh. Harvest started early on the 25th of March and finished with the last of the fruit coming in on the 7th of April, just before a break in the season and significant rain, which brought a rapid end to vintage in the region.

Blended from Walker, Quarry and Avery vineyards, the wine spent 19 months in 100% tight grain French oak, in a mixture of hogsheads and barriques. The barrels were made by St Martin, Saury, Taransaud and Sylvain cooperages, before bottling in December 2011.
