Castillo de Tomas Verdejo 2014

Clear straw-yellow in colour. Very expressive on the nose with aromas of gooseberry, apples and white stone fruits. Impressively rich, with good acidity and fine balance on the palate.

The grapes for this wine come from vineyards located in the heart of Spain's principle vine-growing region, Castilla-La Mancha. With low rainfall, hot days and cool nights, the 30 year plus vines are naturally low-yielding and produce wines of great concentration. The soils are of sandy clay, poor in organic content and rich in limestone and chalk.

Spring got off to a fast start following a wet winter and warm temperatures come March, triggering an early bud break in many regions. Summer was unusually cool and cloudy, slowing the vines' growth cycle. Across the country, a warm dry September with long hang time produced some excellent fruit.

Grapes were picked at optimum ripeness and transferred in cool conditions to the winery where they were pressed and the must transferred to stainless steel tanks. Fermentation took place at low temperature to ensure that the fresh varietal aromas and flavours of the wine were retained. The wine was aged on its fine lees for a month before bottling to add extra complexity and structure.
