Donnafugata Sherazade 2014

Brilliant ruby red with purple hues, the Sherazade offers a bouquet of fragrant strawberries and raspberries enlivened by hints of black pepper. The palate is soft and enveloping with flavours that reflect the nose and smooth tannins.

Since the 2009 vintage, Sherazade has been made solely from Nero d’Avola grapes planted at approximately 5,000 vines per hectare, trained using VSP (vertical shoot postitioning) and spur pruned. The vineyards, on clay-based soils, are between 200 and 600m above sea level. Yields are approximately 7.5 tons per hectare.

The 2014 vintage was marked by a relatively mild winter and a cool, rainy spring. 488mm of rainfall was recorded over 12 months: a slightly lower figure compared to the average of the last 10 years. July and August passed without excesses of heat and with an excellent diurnal temperature range, resulting in particularly fresh and balanced wines. The fruit for the Sherazade was picked in the first ten days of September.

After gentle pressing, the must was fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with an eight day maceration on the skins at 24-26°C. Following malolaction fermentation the wine remained in tank for two months before bottling. It spent almost three months in bottle before release.
