F E Trimbach Gewurztraminer Cuvee de Seigneurs de Ribeaupierrre 2008

TASTING NOTE

It is a wine with flowery and spicy aromas and a dry personality, and yet so rich and so fruity that it almost hints at sweetness … a mere illusion.

Trimbach is based in the village of Ribeauvillé, which is in the shadow of the mediaeval castle of Ribeaupierre, after which the wine is named. The grapes are harvested at maximum ripeness from selected parcels of old Gewurztraminer vines in calcareous marl soils below the castle, from both the Osterberg and Hunawihr Grands Crus. Only the best vintages are labelled as this cuvée which is aged in large oval oak vats to add complexity before bottling.

This long-lived wine makes a fascinating aperitif but truly comes into its own with foie gras or desserts based on fresh ripe fruit. It is simultaneously rich, powerful and dry and is consequently a brilliant match for spicy, complex, Asian and North African food.
