Glen Carlou Chardonnay 2014

This well structured and balanced Chardonnay has great tropical fruit with hints of peach and poached pear on the nose. On the palate the wine delivers lifted varietal characters of melon, stone fruits and citrus which are enriched by the creamy palate. The finish envelopes refreshing acidity which is nicely integrated with great mouth feel. A clean and bright wine, with well structured oak influences due to barrel fermentation in new and aged French oak.

The estate covers 135 hectares of land in total of which 50 hectares are planted with vines. The vines are between 10-20 years old and planted predominantly in a north-west/south-east direction at an altitude of 300 metres above sea level. The vines are trained in a vertical shoot position, with two bud spur pruning.

The 2014 vintage was similar to that of 2013, with just a bit more rainfall which benefited the dryland vineyards to produce high quality grapes. A bigger crop on the vines was thinned out at the beginning of January in order to balance growth and tonnage. Except for one heat wave towards the end of January, the much cooler temperatures at night caused the grapes to ripen slowly which helped to maintain the natural acidity on the grapes. Harvest took place from late January through late February.

The Chardonnay grapes were whole bunch pressed with no cold soak or skin contact. After settling, the juice was innoculated with selected yeasts and fermented in French oak barrels at temperatures between 15-20°C for 7-10 days. About 40% of the wine underwent malolactic fermentation. The wine then aged for 10 months in 30% new, 35% second use and 35% third use French oak barrels, before a light filtration and bottling. It spent three months in bottle before release.
