Glen Carlou Quartz Stone Chardonnay 2013

Bright, lemon-lime yellow with a golden hue. The wine has an abundance of ripe citrus flavours complemented by a touch of toasted hazelnuts and shows the fine mineral characters from the vineyard from which it derives its name. It has a rich, luscious mouthfeel, medium body with balanced acidity and there is noticeable oak with a lingering finish.

The estate covers 135 hectares of land in total of which 50 hectares are planted with vines. The Chardonnay grapes for this wine come exclusively from a single, mature vineyard which is planted in soils containing a generous percentage of quartz stone shards. The vines are 23 years old and planted predominantly in a north-west/south-east direction at an altitude of 300 metres above sea level. The vines are VSP (Vertical Spur Pruned) trained with two bud spur pruning and 101/14 root stock.

The grapes were whole bunch pressed on arrival at the winery and allowed to ferment with natural yeasts at temperatures between 15-22°C for 14-21 days: 90% in 225 and 400 litre French oak barrels and 10% in cement egg-shaped tanks. About 40% of the wine underwent malolactic fermentation. Ageing took place in 90% new French oak and 10% in cement tanks for a period of 11 months. Light filtration took place before bottling in January 2013.
