Greenstone Vineyard Heathcote Sangiovese 2013

£22.99

Vibrant mid plum in colour, the nose opens to reveal dried herbs, cinnamon, clove and savoury red fruits; overlying fragrant spice from fine grained French oak. The palate is seamless, with beautifully integrated fine grained tannins and equally fine acidity – the hallmark of great Sangiovese. The wine, while only medium bodied exhibits richness of fruit and an extended persistence in the mouth.

Situated 400m above sea level, on a ridge of old Cambrian soil, the 20 hectare Greenstone vineyard is planted on red, 500 million year old soils of volcanic origin, with high levels of calcium. This reduces the vines` vigour and is therefore ideally suited to the production of quality wine. The vines are east west in orientation, planted at 4,500 vines per hectare. The grapes are all grown on one hectare of Sangiovese planted in 2005, using low vigour clones selected in Tuscany by Alberto. He stipulated vines producing small, loose bunches, with small berries. The average temperatures in the Greenstone vineyard during the growing season mirrors those in Gaiole in Chianti, one of the classic areas for Sangiovese production in Tuscany.

The 2010 Greenstone Sangiovese very much reflects the extraordinary growing season that the vines experienced over the spring and summer leading up to that vintage. The most significant event was one day of 40°C in November when the vines were in full bloom. The drying winds dessicated many of the flowers that were open on that day. The result was a miniscule yield of less than one tonne per hectare, or around 200g per vine. The resulting wine shows a combined concentration of aromas, flavour and structure not often found in Australian Sangiovese.

The grapes underwent a natural cold soak as fermentation with natural yeasts was slow to start. Maceration lasted three weeks in open top fermenters. The cap was punched down by hand to extract good colour and ripe tannins. After fermentation, the wine was aged for 24 months in French barriques, of which 20% were new.
