Grosset Piccadilly Adelaide Hills Chardonnay 2013

Gently fragrant with hints of cedar and grapefruit. On the palate, it is wonderfully viscous, rich, concentrated and powerful with its tight, linear structure driving the tangy flavours of white peach, nectarine and candied grapefruit towards a finish which zings with natural acidity. Fresh, youthful and vibrant with primary flavours neatly balanced by well-integrated cedary oak.

The organically managed vineyards are situated in the Piccadilly Valley of the Adelaide Hills, the second coldest place in South Australia. In the early 1990′s Grosset was drawn to the intriguing high-acid fruit from this site. The rewards of working with such challenging sites have proved to be substantial. Given that the re-planting of vineyards in the Adelaide Hills has only occurred since the early 1980s, their full potential is only just emerging.

It was an excellent vintage for the Adelaide Hills; the mild, warm weather in spring provided ideal conditions for flowering while the warm, dry summer promoted steady growth in the wines with little disease pressure.

All grapes were hand picked and hand pruned, then crushed and de-stemmed. Only free run juice was used, which was chilled to 0°C for five days and then racked off lees. Fermentation took place in French oak barriques in temperature controlled conditions with 30-40% undergoing malolactic fermentation. Ten months maturation in oak followed, of which 50% was new. The wine was bottled unfined and left in bottle for one year before release.
