Grosset Springvale Riesling 2014

TASTING NOTE

The outstanding vintage is evident in the Grosset Springvale which has impressive finesse and balance between intense primary fruit and schisty minerality. There are typically restrained aromatics, pure lime zest and lemon juice flavours with savoury overtones, taut structure and lively zingy acidity with some flinty notes to finish. This is a satisfying Riesling, the hallmarks of which are its generosity and harmony.

The hilltop sited ‘Springvale’ is the highest (460 metres) and coolest vineyard in the Watervale sub-region. Planted on red loam over limestone, for which this area is renowned, this is a ‘soft rock’ site.  This highly sustaining combination of soil and rock insulates the drought sensitive Riesling vines, which produce lime-green fruit with medium sized berries and fuller bunches. ‘Springvale’ is named after the original property where Riesling vines were first planted in the 1860s.

2014 saw early vintage challenges of extreme heat and rain which resulted in slightly lower than average fruit yields. Despite this, the overall quality achieved this year was outstanding. The vineyard canopies maintained optimum physiological ripeness, resulting in perfect sugar and acid balance in the white varieties. The Springvale vineyard was hand-harvested from the 16th to the 28th of February 2014.

All grapes were hand picked and vines hand pruned, shoot thinned and fruit thinned where necessary. Innoculated with neutral yeast only to maintain focus on natural fruit characters and expression of terroir. Fermentation took place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks over two weeks. There was no skin contact and only the free-run juice was used.
