Herencia Altes Garnatxa Negra 2010

Bright crimson in colour, this wine is very expressive on the nose with notes of red fruits and mineral touches that leap from the glass. Plenty of ripe red fruit on the palate with a touch of spice, sweet, rounded tannins and good levels of balancing acidity.

The old, low-yielding bush vines are all located within the municipality of Batea. Soils here are clay with calcareous content. The climate is Mediterranean with a marked continental influence bringing cold winters. The dominant winds are the "Cerc", a north westerly, and the "Garbi", a fresh sea breeze.

Vintage information

Harvest for the Garnatxa Negra began in September. The season was marked by a spring with high humidity and a warm July with low rainfall and good maintenance of the health of the vines and grapes. Overall, production volumes returned to normal, having been low in the previous year. Grapes were harvested at optimum ripeness and the resulting wines are fresh and vibrant, with plenty of pure varietal fruit character.

The grapes were all harvested by hand from vines of different ages to achieve complexity and balance. Of key importance was to pick grapes with the correct level of phenolic ripeness, as well as sugar levels which would avoid excessive alcohol in the final wine. A second selection took place on arrival at the winery before pressing in a small wooden basket press which ensured only the highest quality juice was obtained without any of the harsh tannins which can result from over extraction.
