Hess Select North Coast Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

  • Silver - Sommelier Wine Awards 2015

This 2012 vintage highlights vibrant red fruit, with aromas and flavours of cherry and raspberry counter-balanced with anise, black pepper spice and cedar notes from oak ageing. The wine shows varietal character, with a soft, pleasant, medium body with appealing tannins and hints of cherry and cola spice on the finish.

Rugged, often wild, with never-ending complexity, this unique growing region has long been home to advocates for family focused sustainable viticulture. A relatively mild Mediterranean climate with predictable heating and cooling cycles is overlaid on a mélange of well-drained volcanic and gravelly soils perfect for concentrating vine energy. Rolling hillsides and benchlands offer prime vineyard sites producing flavourful fruit with layers of agreeable acids and balanced tannins.

If ever a vintage might be called textbook, this would be the one. Budbreak, flowering, no heat events or crippling frost straight through to vérasion, everything on time and neat, resulting in an abundant vintage with fruit destined to bring a smile to winemakers and wine drinkers alike.

The grapes were machine harvested. Upon arrival at the winery, they were fermented to dryness. The wine was aged on its lees in French oak for 12 to 13 months, of which 35% was new.
