Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc 2015
SILVER - IWSC 2015
Pale straw in colour, with a very expressive nose of lifted tropical fruit salad aromas, including melon, guava, passionfruit, and mandarin orange. A juicy wine with great intensity of flavours and mouthwatering, vibrant acidity. Fresh passionfruit and pineapple flavours delight on the finish.
The grapes were selected from vineyards in Marlborough’s Wairau Valley and the neighbouring Awatere Valley. Fast draining, alluvial loams over gravelly sub soils in these valleys provide ideal growing conditions for Sauvignon Blanc. Individual blocks were targeted for their strengths and overall contribution to the blend. The vines ranged in age from 18 months to 15 years bringing a mix of youthful vigour and depth of flavour.
In Marlborough, a warm summer caused advanced berry development, resulting in a vintage that started two weeks earlier than average. An early, cool and long autumn also provided hang time in most regions and varieties, resulting in excellent flavour, depth and intensity. These factors contributed to wines with very balanced acids and alcohol levels with great mouth feel. It was a very compact vintage, where perfect ripening conditions led to many blocks reaching maturity around the same time. The entire 2015 vintage was 20 days from start to finish, a full week shorter than normal. Kim Crawford were uniquely poised to capitalise on this rapid harvest and bring everything in at its optimum ripeness due to considerable recent investment in more receival areas, fermentation tanks, and new state of the art equipment.
The grapes were machine harvested in the cool of the evening and overnight to preserve flavour and pressed immediately with minimal skin contact. Each block was kept separate throughout the various stages of the winemaking process. Fermentations were carried out at low temperatures and when all tanks had completed fermentation they were proportionately blended, fined, stabilised and bottled.
