Amazingly powerful aromas, distinctively Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Lemon meringue pie, sweet passionfruit, melon and tropical fruits with hints of crushed tomato leaf. Intense complex flavours of citrus balanced with ripe tropical fruits of passionfruit and white peach. Crisp acidity and a lingering finish round out this stunning wine.
Spitfire derives its name from the origin of the grapes which were grown on a vineyard formerly used as an air force training base during World War II. The soil in this cool climate site is silty alluvial and the vines are Vertical Shoot Position trained. The grapes were selected from two vineyards, Gane and McFarlane, in the Central Wairau and Rapaura sub-regions.
In late 2014, spring in Marlborough saw cooler than average weather, with frost and hail events not uncommon. Flowering was impacted by the cooler weather in spring and early summer and a lighter fruit set was the result so yields were down. Fortunately, the summer weather was warm and dry. Reflecting the warm dry summer, grapes were harvested in excellent condition.
The fruit was machine harvested in the cool of the evening and overnight to preserve flavours. Each vineyard was kept separate during the winemaking process. The grapes were destemmed with minimal skin contact then gently pressed immediately after crushing. When all tanks had completed fermentation, they were blended, stabilised and bottled
