Loimer Lenz Riesling 2014

Bright lemon yellow. The fruity nose is youthful with juicy white peaches. Light-bodied and crisp with lovely tension on the palate, this Riesling has mouth-watering acidity and clean fruit flavours. Perfect as an aperitif.

Situated 200-400m above sea level, the climate of the Kamp Valley is characterised by cool nights and warm days, with a long, sunny autumn. The high summer temperatures are mitigated by the River Danube and the Waldviertel (forested area). Its long growing season and the difference in temperature between night and day, gives the grapes a chance to reach full ripeness and develop fine perfumes and flavours. Soils are mixed, and well-drained, with Gföhl gneiss (coarse-grained, metamorphic rock containing quartz, felspar and mica) subsoil.

Up to the end of July 2014, the weather was ideal, but then came a difficult August. September and October were warm but wet. The grapes evolved accordingly and strict, meticulous selection was required. The resulting wines are light to medium-bodied, clean, fresh and fruit forward. A “ready to drink” vintage!

The grapes were hand harvested and brought to the cellar in 20kg crates. Depending on the quality, they were either whole-bunch pressed or crushed and then macerated for 4 to 24 hours, which helps to release more flavour. After careful fermentation at 20°C for 2 to 4 weeks, Lenz was matured on its fine lees in steel tanks for four months and then bottled in March 2015, so that its freshness and primary flavours would be retained as much as possible.
