Mitolo Jester Shiraz 2014
Silver - Sommelier Wine Awards 2016
Commended - International Wine Challenge 2016
Deep, dark red. The nose is bright, lifted and aromatic, with raspberry, blackberry and mint chocolate characters. The palate is concentrated with a luscious rolling texture and packed with fresh blackberry and plum, dark chocolate, liquorice and a hint of white pepper spice. The wine is juicy and plush with silky tannins that linger, providing a drying, savoury finish.
The 2014 vintage produced high quality wines with great colour, and bright, pure fruit flavours. Despite a few heat events and a lack of rain in January, McLaren Vale ended up having a gentle ripening period and near perfect conditions for flavour development, thanks to welcome rain and moderated temperatures in February, which freshened up the vines and allowed the grapes to ripen steadily.
Shiraz fruit for the Jester was crushed immediately after delivery to the winery. The skin and juice mix was allowed to warm naturally over several days after which it began fermentation. Fermentation was held cool, helping to retain bright primary fruit characters in the wine. Following this, the wines were carefully pressed, separating them from the skins. The wine was then run down to oak barrels (10% new, 90% second or third use) for 18 months for maturation, before being blended and bottled.
