Montanar Organic Merlot 2015




Intense ruby in colour, with soft aromas and flavours of blueberries and prunes. The palate is brimming with dark plums and berry fruit, with silky tannins that make this a dangerously easy-drinking organic Merlot.

Montanar's vineyards have been certified organic since 1997 and biodynamic since 2012 because they feel the get the best fruit this way. The dry and windy climate of La Mancha makes it easier to practice organic and biodynamic viticulture because fungal diseases are unable to thrive in in these conditions.

Central Spain enjoyed a reliable vintage with average rainfall and mainly hot, dry conditions. The grapes were harvested in August.

Fruit went into a pneumatic press before being fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel vats, and was bottled without any additional ageing.

Fermentation took place at controlled temperatures in stainless steel tanks. The old vines from which the grapes come yield such great concentration that there is no need to macerate at high temperatures to extract the fruit notes. Tannin control is important, however, so the must was racked off the skins quickly and fermentation started early. The wine then underwent malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tank to preserve its fresh, varietal fruit character.
