Morgan Monterey Sauvignon Blanc 2013

The 2013 Sauvignon Blanc features aromas of mango, banana, and cantaloupe. Flavors of nectarine, citrus, and pineapple are lively and refreshing. Neutral oak aging lightly accents the bright acidity and adds an elegant texture. An incredibly food-versatile wine; a natural match for shellfish, seafood, and lighter summer fare.

Our Sauvignon Blanc is a proprietary blend of classic Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Musqué, Semillon, and Albarino. The classic Sauvignon Blanc clone offers typical sweet grass flavors while Sauvignon Musqué is a cultivar that we prize for its aromatic intensity and citrus, tropical fruit flavors. Semillon, another noble grape originally from Bordeaux, adds richness and depth. A small bit of Albarino in the final blend adds interest and minerality. The use of grapes from two different growing areas – the cooler Arroyo Seco AVA and the warmer San Lucas AVA – result in balanced flavor and intensity. The 2013 growing season was a fairly textbook one throughout Monterey County. Winter storms gave way to a warm spring and summer, with trademark brisk afternoon winds off the Bay. With very few weather events, the fruit was allowed to develop slowly. Mildew pressure was at a minimum, insuring “clean,” high quality fruit. The grapes arriving at the winery displayed full phenolic ripeness, with ideal sugar / acid balance. The must was tank fermented to preserve bright fruit flavors. Following fermentation, the wine was transferred to neutral oak for three months of aging. The final blend was composed over several tastings of the individual lots; bottling was on April 7, 2014.
