Omrah Pinot Noir 2013

Cherry and raspberry with the distinctive spice of Pinot and subtle undertones of oak-derived vanilla. Supple and smooth with lashings of sweet fruit, finely polished tannins and balanced acidity that provides a finely poised backbone for the vibrant fruit flavours and varietal spice notes that provide great length and focus.

Fruit was sourced mostly from the Rocky Horror and Hayview vineyard with smaller quantities from the old Bouverie vineyard. All vineyards are around Mount Barker and carefully managed to yield moderately, with shoot and leaf removal employed for optimal fruit exposure and vine growth. All vines grow on ironstone gravel loams with very minimal irrigation.

2013 was unpredictable with dramatic extremes in weather conditions and unseasonal responses in vine phenology. The growing season began with above average winter rainfall, followed by a temperature spike mid-August, resulting in an early start to the growing season. Rainfall was 25% above average for the three months of spring. These mild cool conditions created extensive vegetative growth prior to Christmas. In yet another dramatic change, late January saw unprecedented heat accelerate white grape ripeness to fruition three weeks early. The vineyards felt the pinch resulting from the dry summer conditions and the excessive late January heat, with yields down by 25% but fruit concentration and quality very high. A month of mild conditions in March brought the cool climate Great Southern back to equilibrium. Harvest took place in the earliest and narrowest window in memory.

Fermented warm in a mixture of open and closed fermenters, plunged and pumped over for a maximum of nine days then pressed gently. Each batch was kept separate and racked to French oak barrels, of which 20% were new. Malolactic fermentation occurred in barrel. The blend was partially assembled in June then racked back to barrel for another seven months, with the final blend put together in January before bottling in February.
