Peter Lehmann 1885 Shiraz 2014

The colour is deep, vibrant red leading to a complex bouquet showing dark blackberry and mulberry notes and hints of cracked black pepper. This is a stylish, fruit-driven dry red. It is delicious in its youth but can be aged with confidence for many years if so desired.

Peter Lehmann Wines works with over 140 growers across the length and breadth of the Barossa Valley region, with access to over 750 individual vineyard sites. Ebenezer, in the north-west of the Barossa, is home to Ralph and Angela Schrapel. Their four acre patch of Shiraz, planted on red brown earth soils in 1885, is planted on its own roots at over 300 metres above sea level. The vines are extremely low yielding, producing a red wine of rich colour and flavour intensity.

Harvest for the 2014 vintage started in very hot weather but was interrupted by two days of heavy rain in mid February, after which the weather settled down and we experienced wonderful Indian summer conditions for the remainder of the vintage. This allowed the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly, producing wines of exceptional quality.

The wine was fermented on skins for 10 days to maximise colour and flavour and then aged for 12 months in French oak Hogsheads
