TASTING NOTE

Peter Lehmann’s personal bravery, loyalty and commitment to the Barossa forged the foundations of the winery that bears his name, built in 1979 to protect the livelihood of his mates, the independent Barossa grape growers, and their treasured vineyards. His passion for, and commitment to, the Barossa is infectious and continues with everyone today that is associated with Peter Lehmann Wines, now under the guidance of son Doug Lehmann.

The 2009 vintage started early with a week of hot weather. Following this, the weather settled down to an extended spell of warm, dry days and cool nights producing wines with excellent colour and flavour. After the extreme temperature of the second half of the 2008 vintage, it was good to receive average rainfall over winter and follow up rains of 100mm in November and December. This was followed by a period of hot weather in late January, lasting through to early February. Conditions from then on were favourable with no extreme heat and little rain until late April. Vintage started two weeks later than 2007 and 2008 with yields generally down.

A conviction that the Barossa is the best place in Australia to make wine, and having enough self belief to constantly explore and push the boundaries of wine excellence has yielded some impressive results over the years, perhaps none more spectacularly than in both 2003 and 2006 when they accepted the awards for Best Australian Producer and International Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in London.

Their commitment to the Barossa and the growers has been rewarded and the winemakers enjoy access to a legacy of over 900 vineyards that has no peer in the Barossa winemaking community. The growers, their vineyards and a commitment to excellence in Barossa winemaking have been the backbone of Peter Lehmann Wines since 1979.

Whilst the success of Peter Lehmann’s wines has been based upon reliability and value for money, the world class reputation is consistently reinforced by international recognition of these Barossa Wines of Excellence. The very epitomy of the Barossa Valley, the wines listed here are not only some of the best from their regions but are also recognised as benchmark wines from Australia. Shiraz features heavily and we are delighted to be able to offer for the first time this iconic range of wines culminating in the Stonewell Shiraz. There is no other range of Barossa wines which command the respect world wide that this range does, the supreme efforts from ‘The Baron Of Barossa’!
