Poggio al Tesoro Mediterra 2011

A fragrant and intensely fruity red wine, where the aromas of blackberries, plums and cherries are interwoven with more incisive peppery notes. The result of a winning blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, Mediterra succeeds in the difficult task of expressing the rich complexity of Bolgheri with an easy-drinking, exceedingly pleasurable style.

Fruit for this wine is sourced from the six hectare Le Sondraie vineyard. The vines face west-southwest and are planted at an altitude of just 25 metres above sea level. Soils here are well drained and composed of clay and sandy silt with a high presence of magnesium and iron. The vines are seven years old, spur cordon trained with a very high density of planting (7,500 vines per hectare) producing low yields of approximately 56 hectolitres per hectare.

2011 was a memorable year with a mild spring, rainfall during March and April, more frequent rains in June and July and quite a fresh summer with pleasant day time temperatures almost up until mid-August. Even though the temperatures increased during the second half of August, the harvest presented perfectly healthy and high quality grapes with intense colours and perfumes. The hot and dry days leading up to the harvest did not compromise the phenolic maturation of the grapes. The following drop in temperature was ideal for preserving the aromas and acidity, important elements in the making of elegant, balanced and prestigious wines.

After de-stemming and soft pressing with partial rupture of the berries, fermentation and a 12 day maceration took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks at 26-28°C. After fermentation, the wine was aged for eight months in second use oak barriques where malolactic fermentation was allowed to take place.
