Poggio al Tesoro W Dedicato a Walter Cabernet Franc 2008

International Cabernet Franc Trophy - International Wine Challenge 2012

A rich, dark wine, with a nose of perfectly interwoven, deep aromas of black-berried fruit, pepper and balsamic hints of eucalyptus. The palate is impressive, sustaining an imposing structure with a light tautness, making it both powerful and refined.

This wine is produced from just two rows of vines covering three hectares in the Via Bolgherese vineyard. The vineyard faces west-southwest, situated just 56 metres above sea level, with coarse red sandstone and clay soil. The 17 year old vines are spur-cordon trained, planted at 9,000 vines per hectare and yield approximately 30 hectolitres per hectare. The wine is named after Walter Allegrini, the late brother of Marilisa and Franco.

2008 proved to be an excellent vintage, with a mild spring and wet month of June which allowed the vineyards to accumulate water reserves to last through the dry and breezy summer. Showers in mid-August prevented the grapes from over-ripening and preserved their acidity. The harvest was carried out in prime weather conditions during the first week of October. It was warm and dry by day, while fresh and breezy by night, thus helping the grapes to attain the right degree of maturity and remain healthy despite the light rainfall towards the end of the harvest.

After de-stemming and soft pressing with partial rupture of the berries, fermentation took place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks at 28-30°C for 10 days. Maceration on skins lasted for 26 days. Malolactic fermentation occured naturally in barriques at 22°C during the month of November. The wine was aged in 100% new French barriques for 18 months and was bottled in July 2010. It spent a further 12 months in bottle prior to release
