Quinta do Crasto Duoro Superior 2014

TASTING NOTE

Lifted aromas of fresh Douro red forests fruits, very well combined with elegant bush and spice characters. Excellent approach, with upfront red fruits leading to a solid structure with fresh and elegant tannins. Great acidity, developing to a pleasant, well balanced and persistent finished, vinified for 12 months in 225 litres French oak barrels.

Situated on the North bank of the river Douro, half way between Regua and Pinhao, Quinta do Crasto is arguably the finest estate for the production of red wine in Portugal. The top bottlings have achieved the highest Parker ratings so far of any wine in the country (2003 Vinha Maria Teresa – 96 points), but there is also great strength in depth all the way from the mid priced range (the 2005 Old Vines Reserva was voted third in the Wine Spectator’s global top 100 ranking in 2008) to the entry level Douro Red which regularly wins accolades for its exceptional value for money.
The winemaking philosophy is the same for all of the red wines, with pure ripe fruit from traditional Douro varieties, overlaid with clean barrique ageing and extremely smooth tannins. Complexity and concentration increase exponentially with the price tag, reflecting the age of the vines (Reserva and Touriga Nacional) and best vineyards (Vinha Maria Teresa and Vinha da Ponte), which were planted over a century ago with a field blend.
This year we are offering the estate’s Douro white for the first time. Gouveio, Rabigato and Rouperio provide the fruit and body while Sercial lends the fresh acid structure and minerality which may give you a new perspective on the potential for the region’s whites. This is definitely going to be one of the top wines of the summer for its refreshing unoaked quaffability, citrus and hint of cut grass.
The estate continues to go from strength to strength for the quality of its port, much of which is sold to the top shippers for their vintage blends. If you buy it with the Crasto label, the quality is as high and the value for money is better: one for blind tasting!
