S C Pannell Tempranillo Touriga 2014



Abundant Tempranillo black fruits, plums, cocoa and earthiness are overlaid with Touriga National’s stewed fruits, jasmine scented florals and nutmeg spices. The intense and tightly intertwined flavours are primarily of fresh blackberries with plum pudding and panforte. The 2014 is juicy, luscious and silky. It is a rich flavoursome, medium-full bodied wine. The palate is long and consistent with integrated tannins that provide for a balanced finish, and a synergy with food.

The Grenache vineyards are on deep sand with a north westerly exposure and are simply managed, without pesticides, to ensure the optimal expression of the fruit. The Touriga fruit is sourced from a nine-year old block in Langhorne Creek.

The 2014 Tempranillo Touriga is the best vintage ever made. It was a dry and warm vintage for McLaren Vale, ideal for Iberian varieties. Barossa Valley experienced lower than average temperatures early on but warmer weather kicked in around February, which accelerated the ripening process. It will be remembered as one of the shortest and fastest in years. Both regions experienced a good winter with wetter than normal conditions, especially in Mclaren Vale.

The fruit was hand-harvested, crushed and traditionally vinified in small open top fermenters to optimise flavour extraction during fermentation. Temperatures remained between a minimum of 15°C and a maximum of 35°C. Fermentation was over 14 days, during which time the cap was hand plunged and pumped over. 70% of the Grenache and Shiraz was co-fermented and topped up with Touriga, then finessed with more of the Shiraz and Grenache to get the balance right. Malolactic fermentation took place in stainless steel after which the wine was transferred to old 500 litre French puncheons for eight months.
