Decanter.com - March 2015
Ripe, sweet, pure-fruited style. Refreshing acidity but deep flavours of fresh young cherries. Silky, textured tannins, elegantly styled with a lively savoury fresh bite.
Decanter average score: 17.25/20 points (90+/100 points)
James Suckling - jamessuckling.com - 13 March 2015
This is pinot noir with strawberry, rose, lilac and other flowers. Medium to full body, firm tannins and bright acidity. A wine with tension and style. Needs a little time to soften, so try in 2016.
Score: 92 points
This is the first vintage to include fruit from the vineyard at Lenswood, which is an exciting development for Shaw + Smith. The wine retains its characters of delicacy and charm. There is floral perfume on the nose, followed by a fresh, textured palate, with red cherry and spice notes. Snappy acidity and fine but grippy tannins keep it fresh and taut.
The fruit was sourced from the block behind the Shaw + Smith winery in Balhannah and from their new Lenswood vineyard. Soils here are brown loam over red clay and schist with high plant density at 2,780 vines per hectare. The clones used are the 777 from Burgundy and MV6, the backbone of many of Australia`s best Pinots. The vines are hand pruned and yields very small (around 3.75 tonnes per hectare).
2013 was a fine growing season, with some warm days balanced by consistently cool nights. It was a relatively dry season, and grapes ripened a touch earlier than usual, with the first Shaw + Smith fruit harvested on the 21st of February, and the last coming in on the 13th of March. The weather leading up to harvest was mostly dry, ensuring perfectly healthy fruit.
Grapes were hand picked, destemmed and lightly crushed into two tonne open fermenters. Pre-fermentation maceration lasted four to five days with hand plunging five to six times per day during fermentation. Malolactic fermentation and maturation took place in French oak barriques, of which 25% were new.
