The Paddler Marlborough Riesling 2012

This wine is a low alcohol, fruit focused style brimming with aromas of old-fashioned lemonade and flint alongside subtle honeysuckle floral notes. Bright acidity balances with the touch of residual sugar on the palate, whilst the luscious citrus flavours are complemented by an attractive chalky texture.

The fruit for this wine comes from a single vineyard in the Blind river sub-region of the Awatere Valley, an area which Matt has always thought of as having great potential for aromatic varieties. The low yielding vines were monitored carefully, and harvested at the right moment, to ensure the flavour, acid, and sugar were in the right balance for this style of Riesling.

The 2012 growing season was characterised by a cooler spring which gave rise to lower yields and excellent plant health. The cooler and drier ripening period created very low disease pressure resulting in a later harvest where the subsequent flavours have rich concentration, intensity and length.

The aim with this wine was to make a low alcohol; fruit focused style with refreshing aciditiy. So once we had picked the grapes at the right moment, we avoided skin contact to ensure the absence of any harsh phenolic compounds, and fermented the wine wholly in stainless steel tanks to retain the clean fruit flavours.
